New Exhibition Opens at Ucross Foundation Art Gallery HIDDEN IN PLAIN SIGHT: PHOTOGRAPHS BY JILL BRODY Artist Reception on Saturday, February 13, 2016
Ucross, Wyoming – January 28, 2016 – The exhibition, Hidden in Plain Sight: Photographs by Jill Brody, will open at the Ucross Foundation Art Gallery on February 1, featuring photographs from the Hutterite colonies of Liberty County, Montana. A reception for the artist will take place on Saturday, February 13, from 3:00-5:00 p.m. and will include a gallery talk by Brody at 4:00 p.m. An artist-in-residence at Ucross Foundation in 2012, Brody has spent decades focused on making images drawn from Montana’s rural environment.
The reception and gallery talk on February 13 are open to the public at no charge. The exhibition will be on view through April 1 and is supported in part by a grant from the Wyoming Arts Council, through funding from the Wyoming State Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts.
Over the course of four years, Jill Brody documented the daily existence of the pacifist Christians known as the Hutterites, who prefer to live as untouched by the outside world as possible. Brody was welcomed into the fold of their lives and allowed to create hundreds of images, a portion of which are included in the exhibition. An exhibition catalog will be on sale in the gallery gift shop. The photographs make viewers think about American life today – “what we gain, and what we lose, when our cultural identities become more about our individual selves than our communal selves – a natural outgrowth of the powerful individuating, technologically driven world we inhabit,” as Brody decribes it.
Hidden in Plain Sight was seen at the Missoula Art Museum as well as other exhibition venues around Montana. This is the first time the work will be shown in Wyoming.
The Ucross Foundation Art Gallery is located ½ mile east of the intersection of Highways 14 and 16 East in Ucross. Gallery hours are Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. For further information, call (307) 737-2291 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
