ARTWORK FROM DISTINGUISHED UCROSS ALUMNI TO BE EXHIBITED, SOLD DURING JUNE 5 NEW YORK GALA & AWARDS DINNER

Martirene Alcántara, Pamela Talese, Bill Gilbert, Rhona Bitner, Karen Kitchel, Merrill Wagner, Sydney Pursel, Byron Kim among the featured artists

NEW YORK, NY - May 22, 2018 - Ucross Foundation, the prestigious artists’ residency program and creative lab for the arts, today unveiled the artworks and artists comprising an anticipated art exhibition and sale that will be shown during the Foundation’s premiere New York Gala & Awards Dinner on June 5th, 2018, at the Appel Room at Jazz at Lincoln Center. All the artists featured in the exhibition are Ucross alumni who have donated their works to benefit Ucross as the Foundation celebrates 35 years of fostering creativity in literature, film, theatre, music, dance, and the visual arts. The art collection entitled Wide Skies: Ucross @ 35 is open for viewing and sale via this link, or in person at the Gala celebration.

Featured artists in the exhibition include Byron Kim, Pamela Talese, Martirene Alcántara, Sydney Pursel, Karen Kitchel, Joni Sternbach, Bill Gilbert, Olive Ayhens, Rhona Bitner, Elisabeth Condon, Julie Evans, Andrew Ginzel, Julie Gross, Darina Karpov, Patrick Kikut, Nancy Manter, Eleanor Ray, Don Stinson, Ilene Sunshine, Amy Talluto, Austin Thomas, Josette Urso, Merrill Wagner-Ryman, Sarah Walker, Daniel Wiener and Amanda Wojick. Ranging in style from abstract sublime paintings (Kim) to socially engaged, activist performances, video and new media arts (Pursel) and environmentally-resonant works (Kitchel), the Gala’s collection represents the true diversity of inspiration granted by the Ucross residency. Works by the artists have been included in public and private collections worldwide, including the Whitney Museum of American Art; Metropolitan Museum of Art; Museum of Modern Art; Guggenheim Museum; National Portrait Gallery, London; New York Historical Society; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Art Institute of Chicago; and the Perez Museum, Miami, among many others.

The majestic, rural setting of Ucross serves as inspiration to many artists, including painter Pamela Talese, who remarked on her experience, “Time at Ucross is both spacious and intimate, silent and vivid, offering nourishment, inspiration and courage to face the void that artists understand in a very specific way. It was my very first residency and I never forgot the quiet impact it had on me. What’s fascinating is that those first reverberations could still be felt when I returned 15 years later. Ucross is like an underground river which continues to flow and replenish me.”

During the June 5th gala event, internationally acclaimed author Annie Proulx, an alumna of Ucross and former member of its Board of Trustees, will be presented with the Ucross Award for Distinguished Achievement in the Arts, by David Remnick, editor in chief of The New Yorker. The evening will include live performances and readings by a number of exceptional alumni including Steven Lutvak (A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder), Ricky Ian Gordon (The Grapes of Wrath, opera), bestselling author Tayari Jones, author and Vanity Fair contributor Elissa Schappell, trumpeter Frank London, composer/pianist Dylan Mattingly, and singer-songwriter Kate Schutt. Special guests will include Broadway stars Laura Benanti and Victoria Clark.

The art can be previewed and purchased prior to the event. Please visit gala.ucrossfoundation.org/art-sale for more information on the art sale and display.
