Aura Estrada Prize
Founded by award-winning writer Francisco Goldman, the Aura Estrada Prize, to be formally announced at the Guadaljara Book Fair in November 2008, will be presented biannually to a female writer, 35 or under, living in Mexico or the United States, who writes creative prose in Spanish. The Ucross Foundation, along with Ledig House in upstate New York and Santa Maddalena in Tuscany, Italy, will provide residencies to the winner of the award. Aura Estrada, who was the wife of Francisco Goldman, died in Mexico after an accident in the waves at a Pacific beach. She had just turned 30, had been a Fulbright Fellow and had been studying for her MFA in Creative Writing at Hunter College. Aura and Francisco had been writers-in-residence at Ucross in 2004. As Francisco puts it, "Everyone who knew Aura believed she would be one of the leading voices of her generation….If, in her name, other aspiring women writers can receive some crucial support in their efforts to realize their talents, Aura's hard work and her devotion to being a writer will live on."
