Artist Spotlight

MARY TSIONGAS

Mary-Tsiongas_Greytone-small.jpgTo begin this series, we are featuring MARY TSIONGAS, an interdisciplinary visual artist born in Greece and now based in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  Tsiongas says she is “interested in our relationship to remote places and how we bring them back to where we live; in essence how the wilderness can emerge in our homes and physical bodies; how it sometimes calls us to leave our urban environments.”

Tsiongas was recognized by the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C., as one of the “Women to Watch 2015,” and her art was shown there in the exhibition Organic Matters. Work that she created during her 2017 residency at Ucross was exhibited a few months later at the Richard Levy Gallery in Albuquerque. This year Tsiongas will continue teaching at the University of New Mexico, as a Professor in Experimental Art & Technology in the Department of Art. Click to visit her website

“Ucross is a sublime place,” says Tsiongas.  “A wonderful catalyst for creative work with beautiful dark nights.”
