CONFLUENCES

Take a sound walk on the Ucross campus.

Confluences, an emplaced sound experience created by Ucross Fellows Teri Rueb and Laurids Sonne, is available via a free downloadable app (iOS and Android) that visitors can run on their mobile phones while walking the land.  Interactive areas of sound play as visitors wander, revealing a sonic landscape of sounds recorded over three years that include voices of the Ucross community, former artist residents, local residents of Clear Creek Valley and field recordings taken in different seasons.

Check in at the Ucross Art Gallery, where a limited number of devices and headphones are available for loan. Hours are Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. We recommend that visitors with their own equipment download the app in advance over WiFi and bring headphones. The piece is open-ended, and sounds are scattered throughout the campus and ranch.

SOUND HIKES

The most recent series of sound hikes has concluded. Stay tuned for dates in 2026.

We will meet at the Ucross Art Gallery at 9 a.m. for an introduction and orientation before caravanning to the trail (about two minutes drive).

Notes before you join the hike:

  • Hike level: Intermediate
  • Hike length: Less than two hours
  • Prepare for a hike up and down hills on our ranch, with longer grass on uneven terrain.
  • Wear long pants and hiking shoes; consider carrying a walking stick.
  • We recommend packing a hat, water bottle, snacks, sunscreen, and insect repellant.
  • Download the Confluences app with WiFi in advance of the hike.
  • Bring headphones, if you have them.
  • Loaner phones and headphones are available in the gallery, if needed, first come, first served.
