ABOUT THE BOOK
The Ucross Cookbook: Cooking for Artists on a Wyoming Ranch features the most popular recipes by beloved long-time chef Cindy Brooks, whose artistry in the kitchen has fed and nurtured artists from all around the world. Published by Ucross, the prestigious artist residency program in northern Wyoming, the book is written by author and alumna Cree LeFavour, designed by Chickey Design, and includes food and landscape photography by alumna Martirene Alcántara.
Readers will also sample a taste of the cultural experience around the famed Ucross dinner table with passages by 10 acclaimed artist-alumni: author Sigrid Nunez; visual artist Munson Hunt; choreographer Ann Carlson; playwright and screenwriter Doug Wright; writer and poet (and former chef) Brendan Basham; writer, multi-disciplinary composer and performer Karma Mayet; operatic baritone Nathan Gunn; investigative journalist and novelist Suki Kim; composer and playwright Michael R. Jackson; and novelist and nonfiction writer Judith Freeman. This stunning hardcover book is a welcome addition to any kitchen, coffee table, or art book collection. It makes a wonderful gift for artists, foodies, or anyone interested in the intersection of art, food, and place. |
ABOUT UCROSS |
The nourishment the chef provides is aligned with the artistic, emotional, and physical nourishment of the residency experience, and it is inextricably linked to place, land, and location.

For nearly 40 years, Ucross has grown into a vital and relevant resource for writers, visual artists, composers, and choreographers, as well as those working on collaborative projects. Ucross strives to provide a respectful, comfortable, and productive environment, freeing artists from the pressures and distractions of daily life.
Food has always been at the center of the Ucross experience. Lunches and dinners are prepared and presented by Chef Cindy Brooks, who is the only Ucross staff member to receive a standing ovation each day. Lunches are delivered quietly to studio doors, and group dinners take place at 6:00 p.m. These dinners provide an especially rewarding opportunity for artists to relax together, connect, share creative challenges and solutions, discuss process, network with peers, and sometimes even begin collaborations. Artists in residence frequently note how much the dinner experience—and Cindy’s presentation—means to their creative process. |
